Geologists are just little kids with expensive equipment
So there’s this really cool video of the first Underwater Volcanic Eruption. Yes.
4,000 ft below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Geology nuts have fun!
Iran? Definitely packing the solid-fuel ballistic missiles and an attitude.
So Iran has successfully tested their solid-fuel missile (which equals more accuracy/shorter launch time). This? Not so cool. With weapons on these puppies, Iran is one quick launch–as in, press the big red button–away from wreaking some European/Isreali havoc. Luckily for the rest of the world, these are only “stage two” rockets. The Iranians would need “stage three” ones to launch to anywhere else in the world.
Oh hey, Cold War. 20 years was a short break, you sure we can’t continue? Pretty please?
Check Gizmodo’s analysis for some more military-sounding explanations.
Microsoft & Europe=BFFs; Google & France, not so much
So we all pretty much know how crappy a time of it Google is having with its quixotic book-scanning thing. Oh, those damn copyright laws. France, in this NYT article, it seems has jumped onto the wagon and just ruled Google in violation of copyright law by digitizing tens of thousands of books without proper dealings with publishers/authors/etc. They are to be fined over 300,000 euros (>$430,000US). AND 10,000 euros PER DAY that they still have the books in contention on their servers.
Awkward Laptop Positions: Guess What? They’re Bad for You.
Both Gizmodo and Lifehacker have posted this picture:recently.
It shows awkward positions which we have all used for using laptops/netbooks. The best one, apparently, is lying with your laptop on your thighs as your knees are brought up towards the ceiling. Yay ergonomics?
Retrospective Looks at Tech Guides: We were so cute!
A look back at a tech review from Gizmodo writer Wilson Rothman. He wrote it in 2000. You remember then? Yeah. I was like, eleven. Anyway, enjoy!
Lifehacker’s Best DIY of the Year
So they post a lot of DIY stuff, about one a week. Some of it is ridiculous (like making your own pizza oven), but other stuff is genuinely awesome (hidden room via a swinging bookcase!) I love it when all the blogs do the “best of.” My fave from this year? The low-tech light-diffuser for christmas lights: ping-pong balls! Anyway, check out The List.
